Helping Rural Students Bridge Digital Divide

Hap Seng Building Materials Sdn Bhd handed over a total of 40 brand new personal computers to Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Benoni, Sabah on 14 January 2010. Rohani Abdullah, the Principal of SMK Benoni, was on hand to receive the computers from Ronald John Delaney, Chief Executive – Quarry & Building Materials. The hand-over ceremony was witnessed by YB Datuk Hj. Abdul Rahim bin Ismail, State Assembly Representative of Pantai Manis. Senior representatives of Hap Seng Building Materials as well as teachers and students of the school were also present at the event.

Ron Delaney said, “We are pleased to be able to play a constructive role in the education process of young Malaysians. The new computers and updated software will enable the students of this school to learn and utilise technology and information in a way that will benefit them.”

The delivery schedule of the computers began in December 2009. This initiative is part of the company’s long term commitment to assist communities, especially low income families, around its quarry. “As a Malaysian corporate citizen, Hap Seng Building Materials has always been mindful of its responsibility to the community it operates in. We have and will continue to undertake programmes that will benefit members of our community at large, be it from an education, infrastructure or human capital stand point,” he added.
